Our Story

The idea for Overpass began in December 2024, when founder Bon Lee decided to build a student-run business that could create measurable change in the community. As the idea developed, Bon invited more friends to join her, and the group grew into a team of 14 students who became the co-founders of Overpass.

Throughout summer break, the founder and co-founders met every week to brainstorm potential ideas, define the organization’s purpose, and develop the identity of Overpass. The team later registered the company through Junior Achievement’s Company Program, transforming an early idea into a student-run social enterprise with a shared mission and structure.

As Overpass continued to develop, the team recruited 14 additional members, growing from its original founding team into an organization of 28 students. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Potter, Overpass became a more established organization operating both within the school and throughout the broader community.

Our First Product

For our first initiative, we focused on childhood nutrition and the difficulty many children and families face when trying to understand and establish healthy eating habits.

Our team created Mix It Up, Maxi!, an educational storybook-cookbook designed for children ages six to nine. Through Maxi’s story, young readers are introduced to nutrition in a way that feels approachable, imaginative, and relevant to their everyday lives.

The book is now placed in seven local libraries and continues its impact in the Deer Park community.

Why "Overpass"?

During our summer meetings, Overpass’s first Chief Operating Officer, Mateo Rojas, proposed the name “Overpass.” Its versatility reflects our goal of addressing a wide range of challenges affecting our community.

Just as an overpass connects places, our organization works to bridge the gap between community problems and practical, accessible solutions.
